Do you have to wear a uniform at work?

In New York, if you have to wear a uniform at work, you may be entitled to additional compensation every week. This will depend on what type of job you do. If you work in the restaurant and hospitality industry, your employer has to pay something called uniform maintenance pay if they fail to give you enough uniforms consistent with the number of days you work each week. The best way to figure out if they are giving you enough is contact our office for a free consultation.

How Does Uniform Maintenance Pay Work?

If you work outside the restaurant and hospitality industry, the issue will likely come down to how much you get paid per hour. For example, if you are working as a security guard and getting paid $15.00 per hour in Manhattan, then you would be entitled to additional uniform maintenance pay.

The New York Labor Law mandates up to $18.65 per week in extra pay for each employee who qualifies for Uniform Maintenance Pay. Over the course of a year, that could add up to almost $1,000 in extra pay, and potentially even more if we find other violations in the course of your employment.
